How will irrigation water use and governance evolve in the future? Complexity, uncertainty, and potential conflicts will play a key role. The ZuWaKo project , Module B, has spent the last 2.5 years developing a qualitative model that allows to explore challenges, related to future irrigation needs in agriculture and for urban green as well as policy options of different actors. The model had been developed together with actors from agriculture, local and regional water providers, nature and environment conservation organizations, the city of Heilbronn and different actors of the water administration.
Last week, stakeholders took part in a workshop where they tested strategies for adapting to increasing pressure on water resources. Using the ZuWaKo Serious Game FuturescapesNavigator, participants explored three different future scenarios and evaluated the effects of various combinations of measures.
One key takeaway was how different actions by multiple stakeholders interact with each other and the scenarios. But the workshop not only fostered discussions about water challenges but also highlighted the importance of collaborative, interdisciplinary work. Many participants found this approach inspiring, showing a strong commitment to shaping the future of water governance together.
